IN-PERSON ART CLASSES ON LONG ISLAND

Project Space Gallery in Oyster Bay

Learn the basics while having fun. We offer in-person lessons in the subject of your choice at Project Space Gallery and Studio of the Teaching Studios of Art® at 98 Audrey Ave, Oyster Bay, NY 11771

We offer art lessons to individuals and/or small groups. Our classes are tailored to the needs of the individual students and aim to be of the highest quality. They can be foundational, intermediate or advanced in terms of subject matter. We design a curriculum around your needs. Genres covered are still life, portraiture, florals, landscapes, or anything of special interest. Most of the available time slots are devoted to private classes for individuals, or for semi-private for a small group. We offer 2-3 group classes per week, the rest are private. The schedule is posted below.

We teach artists of all levels of ability, from total beginners to those with more experience

Private classes are $80 for 90 minutes or $320 a month (4 classes)

Group classes are $60 for 90 minutes, or $240 a month (4 classes)

We have a set Foundations curriculum that we are known for. Many artists come to us to work on these fundamental techniques. But you may study whatever you wish with us. The Foundations curriculum is not mandatory.

Classes are either private or very small. Each student works on their own project, in the medium of their choice: Oils, acrylics, watercolor, gouache, charcoal, pastel, pen and ink, or pencil.

Students learn the foundations of drawing and painting by copying from the Old Masters.

THREE OPTIONS FOR IN-PERSON STUDY

OPTION 1 • PORTRAIT DRAWING AND PAINTING - GROUP CLASS

Portrait Painting And Drawing

IN-PERSON CLASS
Mondays, 7-9pm
Rob Zeller, Instructor

In Portrait Painting And Drawing, students will learn to draw and paint a portrait from the live model through both observation of the surface form of the face and understanding the structure underneath.  To capture a likeness, we will study the proportions of the face as well as basic anatomy of the skull and facial muscles.  Students will learn to assign a range of values and colors to match the skin tones in light and shadow, also learn to depict the textures of skin and hair. The instructor will demonstrate, in a slow, step-by-step process—using the same drawing and painting materials as the students— who will follow along and develop their own drawings and paintings in a similar manner.

A Great Option For Beginners:

If you are just starting out, the class Foundations of Academic Drawing and Painting offers a step-by-step approach to the fundamentals of drawing and painting in the classical tradition, and represents the very core concepts of what we do best at the Teaching Studios of Art. A very informative and comprehensive class, students will learn a working method that will span the genres of Still Life, Landscape, as well as copying Old Master drawings and paintings, to gain an understanding of the basics of drawing and painting itself.

Students will work on individual projects, progressing from simple to more complex subject matter.

•  First, they will work on mastering the fundamentals of drawing by copying Bargue Plates and working from plaster casts.

• Then, they will paint the plaster casts in grisaille(monochrome painting). Then they will move on to drawing and painting Still Lifes using both Alla Prima (quick sketch) and Indirect (layered) techniques.

•The Indirect Method of Still Life is to sketch in pencil, transfer the drawing to a canvas, execute both a value and color study, and then proceed to make a finished painting.

• For Alla Prima Still Life, student paint directly on the canvas, using similar methodology but with the goal of finishing in one sitting.

Students can work on landscapes and many other independent projects.
