Summer Camp • Week 2 • Ages 6-8, 9-12
This summer your child can experience something totally new: an immersion into the world of traditional drawing and painting. There is a long history of famous artists getting their training as children.
Young artists who join our Summer Camp learn time honored academic methods of drawing and painting. They also learn about various disciplines such as illustration, landscape, sculpture and more. And we make it fun, while staying true to classical methods.
Children come out of the each workshop week with a better understanding of key concepts of drawing and painting such how light works, value, color and much more. All materials are included.
A wide variety of subjects will be covered, including:
Students will be exposed to a wide variety of media, including:
charcoal, pen and ink, clay, watercolor and acrylic paint
Week 2: The Schedule • 5 days
Monday, July 16th
10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Charcoal Still Life drawings. (Two objects) Discuss values, measuring, shadows, finding shapes within subject matter, line, lifting out, etc.
12 p.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Lunch Break
12:30 pm -2:30 pm Pen & ”Ink” illustrations: Students will copy line illustrations (using pilot point permanent extra fine markers) and fill in with watercolor
Tuesday, July 17th
10 a.m. – 12 p.m. – Continuation of charcoal still life drawings. These compositions will be used for the still life watercolor painting we would do on Thursday.
12 pm – 12:30 pm – Lunch Break
12:30 pm-2:30 pm 3D Sculpture. Sculpting with clay from observation using fruit or simple objects (we will discuss using simple tools to obtain shapes and texture).
Wednesday July 18th
10 a.m.-12 p.m. Plein Air painting in the park. Students will learn basic concepts of “plein air” painting (we will discuss foreground vs. background, sharp vs. soft edges to portray distance, values when rendering foreground vs. distance, large shapes vs. smaller for distance, etc) and then begin their own plain air landscape using pastels.
12 p.m.-12:30 pm Lunch
12:30 pm-2:30 pm Continuation of pastel landscape drawings.
Thursday July 19th
10 a.m.-12 p.m. Basic color theory using watercolors and each child will make their own color wheel (learning about primary, secondary, tertiary colors, etc).
12 p.m.-12:30 pm Lunch
12:30 p.m.-2:30 pm Begin Still Life painting, first drawing out in pencil, then adding color in watercolor (techniques discussed: wash, dry brush, glazing, lifting out, etc)
Friday July 20st
10 a.m. 12 p.m. Relief Sculpting. Students copy some of our plaster casts using clay.
12 p.m. -12:30 pm Lunch
12:30 p.m.-2:30 pm Landscape painting with water colors (dependent upon weather: either plein air in the nearby park or under the gazebo on Audrey Ave.)
