In Direct and Layered Still Life Painting, students will have the opportunity to create still life paintings over the course of multiple sessions, in a direct or layered manner. Rather than starting with a separate drawing, students will dive straight in to their paints and loosely begin putting thin, washy color on their canvas to establish large shapes and placements. After our basic placements are established, we can start coming in with more substantial paint to refine and further develop our paintings over the course of several sessions. As the paintings progress, students can either continue working in a direct, opaque manner, or if they wish, they can start to incorporate transparent glazing and scumbling to achieve subtle effects and adjustments as they refine their work. This class will be a great opportunity to explore color, value, paint handling, composition, and various ways of incorporating direct and layered painting techniques together.
The “Goldilocks” of still life classes, this course is perfect for anyone who wants to learn to paint in a more direct way but also wants a little more time than an alla prima painting allows.
